Welcome to Novi Sad, welcome to Athens of Serbia, beautiful and friendly city, where citizens, cheerful and in the good mood, welcome you honestly, sincerely and friendly. Novi Sad is the capital of Province of Vojvodina , economic, cultural, science, education, health and administrative center with more than 320 000 inhabitants. City lies on the left bank of Danube River in South Baèka region.
Historians consider Novi Sad as young city because it is founded 300 years ago, to be more precise in 1694, even though the archeological sites show first traces of settlements from 3000 B.C. The first inhabitants of Novi Sad were 12 soldiers serving in the Petrovaradin Fortress and 20 bakers, butchers and other craftsmen, who served the needs of the existing garrison. History textbook of Novi Sad is maybe not thick when compared to other European cities but it is – since 1694 when the first bridge defense was built, opposite to Petrovaradin Fortress, and when around it by the river bank, where the river is narrowest, started growing civilian settlement that was at that time called Petrovaradiniense or Rascianica civitas trans Danubium situata (Suburbs of Petrovaradin or Racka town across the Danube) – filled with constant fights and striving for progressive, good and peaceful life of all its first inhabitants Serbs, Germans, Jews, Greeks, Hungarians and Tzintzar. There is a saying that in Novi Sad, because of the traditional hospitality, famous gourmet, abundance of food, wine, music and many good restaurants – is not easy to be a guest! |
